Dr. Julie James has worked with young people, families, and individuals experiencing trauma and adversity for over twenty years. Her practice is trauma-informed, client-centered, and deploys a range of critical perspectives to understand the impact of various forms of oppression. Her focus is on understanding how someone’s life events and environments have impacted them, how they have survived through these situations, and then drawing on already established strengths and resiliency to foster the healing process. She has been trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches including, but not limited to, cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, arts-based methods, mindfulness, and cognitive processing therapy. Julie is also an assistant professor in the school of Child and Youth Care at X University where she teaches in the therapeutic stream. Therapeutic practice in this school focuses on relational, life-space practice, trauma-informed work, and critical perspectives when working with young people and their families. Julie’s area of research and therapeutic work is centered on supporting trans and/or gender diverse young people in ways that are youth-led and driven.
